South African Trolleybus Restoration Project
Johannesburg 589 is one of 45 double-deck trolleybuses built by British United Traction in 1948 and exported to South Africa. 589 is mechanically, electrically, in body structure, layout and appearance virtually identical to London Transport’s SA3 class.
The Johannesburg 589 Group has been set up to project manage on behalf of The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft and to oversee 589’s acquisition and transfer to the UK, and manage the, restoration, maintenance of the vehicle in preservation.
The Johannesburg 589 Group consists of enthusiasts from different sectors of the trolleybus preservation movement working together to further the project.
